On February 1st, Advocates for a Balanced Education and six statewide arts educators’ organizations provided all 100 members of the Colorado Legislature with the brochure Critical Evidence:How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement. The materials also included a letter asking for consideration of all data, including data about the benefits of arts education, as Colorado moves forward with education reform and restructuring. Many thanks to Rep. Michael Merrifield for the actual distribution, and to the Colorado Music Educators for the purchase of the brochures. |

ABE’s inaugural campaign, A Call to Action, took place at the state capitol on July 21, 2006. In the following months, ABE has sought out conversation with policy makers and organizations, looking for opportunities to network and learn more about the attitudes of others towards the marginalization of the arts and humanities in K-12 public education. ABE thanks the Colorado Association of School Boards, Colorado Association of School Executives, Colorado Education Association, Colorado Council on the Arts, Colorado Rural Schools Caucus and the Jared Polis Foundation for their dialogue. |

About ABE: We are a Colorado non-profit organization concerned about the narrowing of the curriculum and the marginalization of arts and humanities as a result of high-stakes testing, snapshot accountability, and higher education requirements placing de facto mandates upon K-12 public education. Fifteen leaders from education, public service and business form the board of Advocates for a Balanced Education and share a desire to offer students-become-adults the balanced education which will provide them with the necessary skills for economic self-sufficiency and participation in a self-governing society. For that purpose, our goal is to assist educational policy makers at all levels of state and local government, as well as the citizenry of communities in supporting the inclusion of the arts and humanities as an essential part of Colorado’s K-12 public education system. |
